We are committed to accurately estimating cancer burden in Uganda's population to inform effective cancer control and intervention strategies in Uganda and beyond
NATIONAL CANCER REGISTRY OF UGANDA
Cancer Data for Cancer Control in Uganda

Cancer Registry Operations and Background in Uganda
National Cancer Registry of Uganda under the Uganda Cancer Institute is undertaking comprehensive cancer data collection, analysis and interpretations for accurate cancer incidence estimation to inform cancer control health policy and interventions in Uganda. Most of these cancer data come from Uganda Cancer Institute in Kampala and the regional cancer centres in Gulu, Arua and Mbarara. Other sources of cancer data and information are from three main population-based cancer registries in Uganda namely Kampala Cancer Registry (KCR), Gulu Cancer Registry (GCR) and Mbarara Cancer Registry (MCR). The data from KCR and GCR are used to determine the burden of cancers in Uganda in terms of incidences, mortality, survival and prevalence of the most common cancers in Uganda.

Gulu Cancer Registry
The Gulu Cancer Registry was established in 2014. It is located at St. Mary's Hospital Lacor in Gulu City. Its catchment area is the districts of Gulu, Amuru, Nwoya, Omoro and Gulu City. It serves a catchment population of about 1.1M people. The GCR was established to determine cancer incidence in the Acholi Sub-Region in Northern Uganda. The expansive type of population pyramid for northern Uganda is typical of the overall population of Uganda as per the UBOS (2024) national population and housing census.

Kampala Cancer Registry
The Kampala Cancer Registry (KCR) was established in the Department of Pathology of Makerere Faculty of Medicine (now the College of Health Sciences, Makerere University) in 1951 as a population-based cancer registry with the aim of determining cancer incidence in the population of Kyadondo County in Kampala, Uganda. Currently, the catchment population served by KCR is about 3M people. The population pyramid of Kyadondo County (Central Uganda) below indicates more youth between the age group of 20-30 years compared to other sub-regions of Uganda, thus a confounding factor in the generalization of cancer incidence from a single or few population-based cancer registries, given that age is a major risk factor for different cancers. Using a national cancer database that pools data from difference region would provide a precise estimate of cancer incidence in Uganda for effective cancer control programs and interventions.

About Us
The National Cancer Registry program of Uganda is a secretariat based at the Uganda Cancer Institute, Division of Cancer Registration.
